Romantic things to do in NYC – prep beforehand!
To plan your visit to NYC is best to be prepared, so here are some general tips to keep in mind before focusing on romantic things to do in NYC.
Romantic NYC – prepare for the weather
Late spring and fall/early winter are gorgeous seasons to visit NYC as the weather is more temperate and comfortable. The summer is hot and humid and the cold weather during winter may not be as appealing for visitors. The Christmas season is a particularly beautiful and romantic season to make a trip here.
Romantic NYC – plan ahead for transportation around NYC
You can get around a lot of NYC by foot, but the metro and taxi are two other convenient options for getting around and exploring.
Romantic NYC – consider how you’re getting there
There are three airports in NYC alone, so if you’re flying in from out of state you have options. JFK airport is one of the main airports in the city, and the airport alone has a lot of history to it and it will always be known, especially to locals, as the Pan Am Worldport, home of Pan American World Airways.
If you are coming from elsewhere on the East Coast, a train might be a better or more convenient option for you. And of course, you have the option of driving to NYC, but if you choose to do so just prepare ahead of time for where you want to park. Parking can be a bit of a nightmare in the city, and circling for parking should not be on your list of romantic things to do in NYC!
Romantic NYC – get the right hotel
Booking.comWhere you staying in the city can have a great impact on your getaway, especially for those in search of romantic things to do in NYC. Consider what part of the city you want to be in, explore from, and spend the majority of your time.
LOCAL’S TIP – The NoMad Restaurant (by Dan from Cabin Critic) Located inside the NoMad Hotel, The Michelin-rated restaurant is both elegant yet approachable. Many areas of the dining room lend themselves to romance with the rich colored decor of dark reds and blacks. The menu feels both elevated and comfortable at the same time with the black truffle and foie gras stuffed chicken as the most well-known highlight.

Romantic things to do in NYC – places and activities for your list
Romantic things to do in NYC – walk on the Brooklyn Bridge
On the top of my list of romantic things to do in NYC is to take 30 minutes (or longer to stop enjoy the view along the way) to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, a classic landmark in New York. If you catch it just as the sun is going down, you’ll get views over Manhattan with the lights on as well. It can get quite busy, so if you want to experience this with fewer crowds, head out early in the morning.
Romantic things to do in NYC – stroll at Brooklyn Botanic Garden
There is so much to NYC beyond Manhattan, and Brooklyn is one of the boroughs that are worth checking out. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden is beautiful and feels like paradise, so head here for a romantic walk through over 50 acres of cherry blossoms, rose gardens, and other beautiful plants, greenery, and color.
Romantic things to do in NYC- picnic in Central Park
Central Park is one of the most popular places in the city, and this park is the perfect spot for a picnic and my second priority for romantic things to do in NYC. If you go off the standard lunch hour between 12-1 pm, you can avoid the lunch crowd and have a bit more privacy for a romantic picnic. Overall, Central Park is gorgeous, you can people watch and enjoy the city views while also feeling immersed in nature.
Romantic things to do in NYC – Horse Carriage Ride in New York
A horse carriage ride is a typical touristy activity, but for good reason! It’s romantic and also a good way to see the city and third in the top of my list of romantic things to do in NYC. Cuddle up in the carriage and just take in all the beautiful views, plus the sweet carriage experience. The most romantic options for a horse carriage ride are in Central Park, available throughout the day and night with different time slots and options ranging from 20-60 minutes.
Romantic things to do in NYC – watch a Broadway show
A Broadway show is a classic NYC activity, so have fun getting dressed up and head out for a special evening! Many people don’t have access to Broadway shows in their hometowns and this one of the many perks of visiting NYC. There are many theatres in the city, including Eugene O’Neill Theatre, Music Box Theatre, Lyric Theatre, Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, and more.
Romantic things to do in NYC – catch a Jazz Show in Harlem
If you and your partner love jazz or you just want a classic NYC experience, catch a jazz show in Harlem. Go for a happy hour or dinner beforehand and enjoy the rest of your evening with gorgeous music. This is especially wonderful for couples who want to enjoy a night out, but rather than be in the club or bar scene, want to be able to cozy up together and enjoy a romantic evening.
Romantic things to do in NYC – helicopter tour
See the New York skyline with a helicopter tour that takes you over the city. See the Statue of Liberty and iconic sites from above, flying above it at all.
Romantic things to do in NYC – stroll the High Line
The High Line is a converted park that gives you views of the city and gives you a green escape from the city. Head here for a picnic, to simply relax, and enjoy some time outside together.
Romantic things to do in NYC – explore the Whitney Art Museum
There are many museums to choose from in NYC, and the Whitney Art Museum is worth considering taking the time to visit. It has contemporary art, not to mention a rooftop restaurant you can dine in or get a cup of coffee at after your visit.
Romantic things to do in NYC – explore the Cloisters
The Met Cloisters have incredible artwork from medieval Europe, gardens to stroll through, and panoramic views over the Hudson River to take in. It’s easily one of the most romantic things to do in NYC.
While you’re here, it is worth setting aside some time (and money) for a couple’s romantic meal in a special restaurant. NYC has a wonderful foodie scene, so plan ahead and make reservations for places you want to eat out at. A popular romantic restaurant in the city is Serendipity 3, which became more popular after the movie Serendipity filmed a romantic scene here.
